Youths in their hundreds, yesterday, staged a protest at the Ado-Ekiti office of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, insisting that adoption of consensus to pick its gubernatorial candidate would spell doom for the party. The protesters, who carried placards of various inscriptions, had stormed the party secretariat as early as 8.30 a.m., calling on the Central Working Committee, CWC, to rescind its decision to pick a consensus candidate among the array of gubernatorial aspirants which has risen to 24 The protesters came at the time six members of the CWC, Ado – Ekiti holding a very crucial meeting, they were held hostage through out the period tof he protest. The party has been embroiled in crisis since the party announced the 11-man consensus committee led by Justice Edward Ojuolape, culminated in the suspension of PDP Chairman, Chief Makanjuola Ogundipe for alleged compromise. The aggrieved youths pointed out that whenever the party adopted a consensus to pick its gubernatorial candidate to the post, it used to lose. The spokesperson on behalf of the youths, Hon. Akinniyi Sunday said the youth wing of the party as well as elders rejected consensus in its entirety, saying it cannot produce credible candidate that can dislodge the incumbent Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi. Akinniyi, former Secretary of Ikere Local Government said: “The Chairman, Chief Makajuola Ogundipe must be aware that PDP is not for sale. He cannot impose anybody and on us. “We want a candidate that can win election. Candidate that is popular at the grassroots. We are being guided by history. “Where PDP did not do primaries, we lost in the past, and we don’t want such to happen in Ekiti and that is why we are requesting for primary and anything outside this is unacceptable,” the protesters insisted. They stressed that anything outside credible, free and fair primary, is unacceptable to the youth wing of the party and the grassroots .
