Youve seen the ice buckets. But what is ALS, you ask? It stands for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and is also known as Lou Gehrigs Disease, named after the famous Yankee baseball player, who suffered from the condition. ALS is a disease that impairs motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, which are responsible for the brains ability to control muscle movement. Because of this, the fatal disease causes sufferers to experience significant muscle atrophy and eventually become fully paralyzed in the later stages. The disease affects roughly 2 out of every 100,000 people and its estimated that ~ 30,000 people are affected at any one time. There is currently no cure for ALS. Please help raise awareness by participating in the ice bucket challenge and also explaining this condition to your neighbors, co-workers and mailman.
