Yusuf bin Tashafeen: A Leader whose Actions Spoke In the year 1085 CE, Alfonso the Christian King of Leon, and Castille, in modern day Spain, invaded Toledo, conquering the Taifa of Zaragoza which was ruled by the Muslims in what was called al-Andalus. The Amirs of the smaller Kingdoms where unable to resist the Spanish army hence they sought assistance and help from neighboring Muslims in Maghrib, Northern Africa. Yusuf bin Tashafeen (rh), as the Wali of Maghrib, answered the call of the Muslims and the call of Allah (swt) and crossed the straights of Algeria and settled in Seville. He then accompanied the Amirs of the major cities, to meet Alfonso in battle. Based on the hadith by RasulAllah (saw), he offered the king three choices: accept Islam, pay the Jizya or engage in battle (i.e. war). The battle ensued on the Friday. Yusuf bin Tashafeen (rh) with his preparation and determination, along with uniting with the Amirs of al-Andulus was able to defeat the Christian King. This prevented the Christian advance of al-Andalus for several generations after that. This is an example of a ruler who understood the concept of Wilaya (ruling) in Islam. Mashallah!
