Zakat “And perform Salah and give Zakaah” (Qur’an, 2:43) “And they were commanded not, but that they should worship Allah, and worship none but Him Alone (abstaining from ascribing partners to Him), and perform Salah and give Zakah, and that is the true religion.” (Qur’an, 98:5) “Take Sadaqah (alms) from their wealth in order to purify them and sanctify them with it.” (Qur’an, 9:103) “Allah destroys wealth obtained from interest and will give increase for deed of charity” (Qur’an, 2:276) Abu Huraira (radiyallahu ta’ala ‘anhu) narrates that when Allah’s Messenger (sallalahu ‘alahi wasallam) died and Abu Bakr (radiyallahu ta’ala ‘anhu) became the caliph some Arabs renegaded (converted to disbelief) (Abu bakr decided to declare war against them), Umar (radiayallahu ta’ala ‘anhu) said to Abu Bakr, “How can you fight with these people although Allah’s Messenger (sallalahu ‘alahi wasallam) said, ‘I have been ordered (by Allah) to fight the people till they say: La ilaha ill-Allah (none has the right to be worshipped but Allah) and whoever said it then he will save his life and property from me except on trespassing the law, and his accounts will be with Allah.” Abu Bakr said, “By Allah! I will fight those who differentiate between the Salat and the Zakat, as Zakat is the compulsory right to be taken from the property (according to Allah’s Orders). By Allah! If they refuse to pay me even a she-kid which they used to pay at the time of Allah’s Messenger (sallalahu ‘alahi wasallam) I would fight with them for withholding it”. Then ‘Umar said, “By Allah, it was nothing, but Allah opened Abu Bakr’s chest towards the decision (to fight) and I came to know that his decision was right.” (Bukhari) Abu Huraira (radiyallahu ta’ala ‘anhu) reported that Allah’s Messenger (sallalahu ‘alahi wasallam) said, “The Hour (Day of Judgement) will not be established till your wealth increases so much so that one will be worried, for no one will accept his Zakat and the person to whom he will give it will reply, ‘I am not in need of it.’” (Bukhari)
