Zambia U17 Womens team played poorly at the World Cup because there is no womens league in Zambia that is the familiar phrase you will hear from people who have no knowledge about Womens football in Zambia. The Truth of the matter is: We do have Womens Leagues running in Zambia. In Lusaka we have a Premier League Under FAZ with 12 teams and also in the Amateur Under Lusaka Football Association we have 10 Amateur teams Participating every year. On the Copper belt we also have a league running with 10 teams participating but the problem is motivation from it. We already have leagues running but there are no sponsors to motivate the players to perform better and get awards as a team or as an individual. The players play year in and year out for the love of the game without receiving anything, there are no allowances for most teams, No trophy or any form of recognition for the League winners at the end of the season, no prizes for individual players( Top scorer, player of the year, youngest player to mention but a few). They (Governing bodies) said when there was a Women empowerment meeting but all those fade in words and on paper that they would request every Premier League Mens team to have and sponsor a womens team. Every time they(men) play the league games, the Womens teams will be the curtain raisers. We need to find well wishers who can come on board and motivate these gals and sponsor the league. And if not we can come up with a national league where every province has a team(every mayor or PS in that province sponsors a womens team) then we have a Provincial/National league running containing all the teams from different provinces then we shall be able to have wide platform to select players from and very good talent improvement because the competition will tough. We cannot reap where we did not sow, lets invest and sow Womens football and see how far and how well they can go and perform then we can blame them if they dont do well.
