Zimbabwe press highlights toll fee lawsuit, others Focus on Zimbabwe/ News briefs: + A lawsuit by human rights activists against a government decision to double tollgate charges, + The suspension of two employees at the state broadcaster and + The threat by Botswana to deport Zimbabweans living in the country. The state-run Herald and private NewsDay reported that a group of lawyers had filed an urgent High Court application challenging a 100-percent increase in toll fees announced by Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Obert Mpofu last week. Mpofu last week gazetted the Toll Roads (Regional Trunk Road Network) (Amendment) Regulations, 2014 that, among other things, increased toll fees for light private vehicles from US$1 to US$2. The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights wants the Statutory Instrument 106/14, which contained the increases, to be set aside pending finalisation of the case. The Herald said two senior Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation employees – head of production Clifford Mfiri and head of television Emma Shamuyarira – had been suspended for failing to broadcast live last Sunday’s burial of ZANU PF official Stanley Sakupwanya who was declared a national hero and interred at the National Heroes Acre in Harare. NewsDay reported that Zimbabweans who sought refugee status in Botswana risked being kicked out after the neighbouring country’s Defence, Justice and Security Minister Ramadeluka Seretse indicated that the political environment was now stable and safe for asylum seekers to return home. Scores of Zimbabweans fled to Botswana citing political persecution before 2009. (Source : APA)
