Zoning law would prevent new pawn shops in W. Spfld. WEST - TopicsExpress

Zoning law would prevent new pawn shops in W. Spfld. WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – West Springfield Town Councilors passed a zoning ordinance Monday night in hopes of keeping negative effects of a casino out of their town. The ordinance prevents new pawn shops, check-cashing businesses, secondhand jewelry dealers and hourly hotels from being built in the Memorial Corridor Overlay District. That district is mainly the Merrick section of West Springfield, across the river from the proposed casino site. Town Councilor George Condon made it clear: the ordinance is not picking on existing businesses. Condon said, “People might be looking for money late at night and go across the river to West Springfield and try to dispose of some of their belongings that way. So it’s really trying to keep the neighborhood in its current form and try not to have any negative impacts on it.” The ordinance will go into effect if Mayor Ed Sullivan signs it.
