a chilly saturday morning, if you can just indulge me for a long 18 minutes or so . . . may 15, 1986, i was active duty u.s. navy stationed in subic bay, philippines. i flew to guam to be processed for my u.s. citizenship. the judge asked me three questions: 1. how many judges are there in the supreme court? 2. how many senators are there from your state? 3. can you name any of them? i was not able to answer any of the questions correctly. the judge looked at me, somewhat disappointed, but said, be back here tomorrow at 0900 in your uniform. you probably already heard the term nuclear option, its been in the news very prominently lately. its really hard to miss. unless, of course, you have your filter or blinders on. the significance of this historic event? let me just put it, in the simplest term, if i may, the supreme court gave us george w. bush and citizens united . . . and if you dont know who scalia, thomas, and alito are, the current president and the living former presidents will be long gone, and these assholes will still be making decisions on how we live our lives . . .
