a couple of weeks ago, a student told me that I dont want to be known for single handedly ruining the University of Akrons relationship with the US Army by not allowing him to do a make up test one week late after he had to report for some sort of training for the Army. His note was to excuse him for a Thursday and Friday. Our test was on the following Tuesday, he showed up a week later and I told him hed be receiving a 0. He told me his sergeant would be contacting me to take care of this. He also told me that I didnt want to mess with his sergeant or the army. I told him that although I think of myself as fairly powerful, I dont think I have that kind of power (re: to ruin our relationship with the armed forces!). I also told him Id take my changes with his sergeant. Obviously, Ive not heard from him or anyone from the army since. As I ponder this, do students really think those sort of threats would work? And more curiously, DO they work sometimes? Eh, one less paper to grade :).
