a message to a friend. the best thing we can do is take care of what is right in front of us. we feel sorrow for those who suffer but we do not let ourselves be overwhelmed by it. that is all we can do. everything else is fantasy. maezumi roshi said it this way, cover the ground where you stand. some folks might not understand what that means and think its nothing. but he is saying - take care of the world right in front of you. dont wallow in self indulgent emotions and self pity. be compassionate toward others and do no harm. if we can do that we transform the world in ways we cannot even begin to perceive.
