No Ebola has been found in Burkina Faso, but it is our responsibility to pray for people who are suffering. This true story shows how the poor living conditions of villagers in Burkina Faso increases the threat of disease and infection. The living conditions in Burkina Faso are similar to those in countries where Ebola is spreading. Félicité Nanéma came to the Ellel Medical Center with a severe infection on her right hand. It had been just three months since Félicité Nanéma, had given birth to a baby at the Ellel Medical Center. Her husband brought her back to the hospital with a medical problem that was stopping her from doing her daily chores. Her left hand has been partially paralyzed for awhile making it more difficult to carry water and work with her hands. A new injury to her right hand led to a major infection. The injured had had not healed and was swollen to twice the size. With this new injury and infection, Félicité found it nearly impossible to care for her infant and to do household chores. The doctor at Ellel lanced Félicité’s hand to allow the infection to drain and gave her antibiotics. Her husband who brought her to the hospital could not stand to watch and as the procedure began, he quickly left never to be seen again. When the Ellel Medical Center staff saw the extreme poverty of the woman, they had pity on her. They provided clean clothes for mother and infant. They explained the love of the Savior to Félicité. She was told to return daily for the staff to change her bandages and examine her hand. It will be very difficult for Félicité to keep the dressing clean. She lives in a one-room adobe-like brick home with a dirt floor. Her home has no running water nor electricity. There is no one to help her fetch water from the well and care for her family. Fortunately this woman knew where to find people she could trust when she was in an extreme circumstance. She was also given hope for recovery. It takes time to gain the trust of those who have never received medical assistance during their entire life. It is part of ACTS plan to compassionately care for the suffering ones while we share Christ’s love. We give them hope. It is difficult to imagine what it might be like to a villager in Burkina Faso. Poverty crushes the spirit. Food is scarce. At times there is enough for but one meal every couple of days. -Villagers have no one to turn to when their children are sick. -Women have no knowledge of how to help with simple things like fevers. -Most villagers do not know how to read or write. -There is no way to reach a better life. -Hopelessness takes over. This is how poor villagers in Burkina Faso live their lives. No help. No hope. But we can thank the Lord for his mercy. He gave a vision to Joanna Ilboudo to begin ACTS Ministry to help the poor. Pray for the staff as they provide medical and spiritual care to those who seek help at the Ellel Medical Center. Pray for the salvation of Félicité, her husband and child.
