#anotherresearchconfirmation Open Letter to the UIC College of Education Community, January 27, 2014 On Tuesday, Jan 21, a faculty member in the College of Education found anti-Black racist graffiti in the third floor men’s bathroom in the College of Education. He contacted a College administrator, who contacted the University facilities department and had it removed within minutes. This is a cause of deep concern. We, the undersigned faculty and staff, state unequivocally that we are appalled by the graffiti. We reaffirm our commitment to the College goal of serving African American and Latino students and communities in Chicago, and to our mission that “requires us to acknowledge and address the problems of inequality explicitly and courageously.” Towards that mission, we encourage all members of the College community to support and attend a public forum called by undergraduate students of color in the urban elementary education program this Thurs, Jan 30, at 5:00 in the Commons. The purpose of the forum is to “discuss experiences in the program and lay out suggestions for support and inclusiveness” and to “discuss the need for mentorship, identity shifting, financial assistance for students of color, building relationships between cohort members, and addressing microaggressions. We urge all faculty and students to take up these issues in their classrooms and to work for a climate that incorporates the perspectives of anti-racist educators and scholars and authors of color, and that validates and supports the knowledge, lives, and experiences of students of color in our classrooms and all the work that we do. This is central to prepare ALL our students to teach and lead public schools and conduct educational research.
