#armeniangenocide April 24, 2010: Four years ago as a freshmen at the UofM, with the help from my friends Lolo & Satenig, I finished a for a short documentary of the events and impact of the Armenian Genocide that I had made for one of my classes. In the video, I push for advocacy of an Armenian Genocide Bill to be passed by the US Senate and public recognition by the President. Fast forward 4 years to this day, April 24, 2014, where I am now a senior. Today marks the 99th Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide, where on this day, April 24, 1915, 1.5 million Armenians were lost. In 4 years, I have still yet to see an Armenian Genocide Recognition bill be passed by the Senate, nor has their been acknowledgement by the president that an actual genocide happened. In 4 years, I have realized the importance of genocide recognition is, not on the national level. The real importance of Armenian Genocide recognition stems locally in our communities and extended networks. I am grateful for my Armenian identity, and how it has come to define me. I am proud of our my Armenian community, and the work our youth and the AYF has done in the past 4 years. I am grateful for my peers and friends in Detroit and at the University of Michigan, for being interested in my Armenian identity and supportive of the Armenian cause. When you have non-Armenian friends taking their own initiative to approach you about the Armenian Genocide, and take their own time educate themselves and others about it, thats when you know it. #turkeyfailed. youtu.be/lvJtjhQMTEY
