back home after a VERY early morning. I went to my husbands - TopicsExpress

back home after a VERY early morning. I went to my husbands workplace and gave a talk about what drunk or buzzed driving can do to others. Leah was an angel this morning and quite the ambassador for service dogs. About 1/3 of the employees are Muslim, where there is a cultural and religious avoidance of dogs. Several came up to us after the meeting, asking to meet Leah and asking a lot of questions about dogs, and working dogs. She greeted nicely, and even did a few tricks for showing off, like picking up a quarter, and my cane. Some of the questions made me scratch my head. like,, why do service dogs all look the same? I told them most are golden retrievers or laboradors, but not all, and that many are bred by programs for specific temperaments. They wanted to know if they would bite or were protection trained. I said definitely NOT protection trained. Most service dogs are so submissive and seeking to please people, that they would take abuse before becoming aggressive. But any dog CAN bite. They wanted to know about training, and I explained it took from puppyhood to about 2 years of age to learn the 60 commands Leah came with, and yes I had to go to training too. In all honesty I had more FUN being a service dog ambassador after the meeting, than discussing how a drunk driver changed my life 20 years ago. But hopefully my talk about what I lost, the constant pain, the 7 spine surgeries etc etc made them think twice about just a couple of beers on the way home from work.
