bbc/news/world-middle-east-27865759 ISIL has taken another city in Iraq. I found it interesting to note that the zone this movements taken over directly replicates the old stomping ground of the pre-surge insurgency, including most of Al-Anbar. The difference this time is that this insurgency can actually do more in the north than the old one did. Theres the inevitable Vietnam analogy here, but I think that to call ISIL analoguous to Hanois army undersells what Hanoi actually used in 1973-5. They were conventional soldiers with a regular army, these guys are nothing of the sort.
