bluzmail Tuesday May 27, 2014 Perth Blues Club - perthbluesclub Charles Hotel - 509 Charles St, North Perth - 8 pm - Entry $15 members $10 Mike Elrington – 8 pm “Blistering guitar playing that would make Clapton proud - Forte Magazine, Geelong, Australia One of the most exciting acts to come out of Australia in many years! - Ed Ivey, Blues Revue Magazine, San Francisco, USA With his blistering guitar playing, soulful, gut-wrenching vocals and innovative songwriting, 30 year old Mike Elrington is quickly showing promise as one of the most exciting young performers in Australia today. Whether working with his three-piece electric band (The Advocates) or as an acoustic solo act, Mike’s original mix of driving rock/blues/prog/alternative/pop and acoustic folk/rock delivers with raw passion and dynamite in every performance. After winning his High School Battle of the Bands competition in 1999, Mike started his career in Adelaide and was a regular performer at the city’s premier live music venue: The Governor Hindmarsh Hotel. Gigs at the Gov included many various supports for local and interstate touring blues/roots acts. He moved to Melbourne in 2000. In March 2005, Mike completed his first tour of the United States where he headlined a sold-out show at Biscuits & Blues in San Francisco (Twice voted No.1 Blues Club in America by the W/C. Handy Foundation) and was also fortunate enough to perform at a wide range of venues all over the country including The 930 Blues Café in Jackson, Mississippi and Buddy Guy’s Legends in Chicago where he performed live on stage with Shirley King (Daughter of Blues Legend BB King). With many years of touring Australia, the USA, and releasing five albums along the way, this man is only just getting started in his lifelong journey of music. “I always look forward to a PBC show as I believe it is one of the most well-run and well-supported Blues Societies in the country. Theres always a good crowd of enthusiastic blues lovers in there an after nine years of playing at PBC, I can honestly say that Ive never had a bad show there.” We’re looking forward to a high-energy, foot-stompin display of soulful acoustic blues/rock. Gary Cox Band - Filming for DVD – 8:45 pm Guitar giant Gary Cox and his band will be filming their show on 27 May for DVD release so if you want to be in it, you had better be there! In 2005, after Gary stumbled across Malcolm Skinner (vocals and bass) at a jam session such was their chemistry they decided to form a band, add in drummer Wayne Antioch and the Gary Cox Band was born. Their vision was to treat a pub gig more like it was a concert and really pull out all the stops. The band rehearsed solidly for months before debuting at the Perth Blues Club for a Rory Gallagher Tribute night. Such was the success of that night that it continued as an annual event for several years. The three-piece’s set list comes from a mixed bag of well over 100 songs, covering all tastes, but still deeply blues-based. Some tunes are original and their covers boast the bands signature, special touches that make them their own. They regularly play the songs of Rory Gallagher, Ry Cooder, Eric Clapton, BB King, The Rolling Stones, Robert Johnson, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles and all the old blues greats. Sometimes, for some spice, theyll add a Frank Zappa, Steve Vai, Crowded House or Pink Floyd song into the mix. Sounds like a gig not to miss! Shakey Jake – 10 pm Is a four-piece blues-based rock cover outfit that has been playing around the traps and sure has the songs to show for it. From party favourites by the likes of Free, Thin Lizzy, Humble Pie and ZZ Top to classic blues nuggets from Johnny Winter and Peter Green: there’s all sorts of chops goin’ on here! Friday May 30, 2014 Flying Scotsman – Mt Lawley MattyTWall “An awesome blues guitarist” - Lori, Nashville MattyTWall wrings raw emotions from single notes, stretching the strings of a Les Paul into sounds both persuasive and human. With his vocals, he coils along the lines of the guitar. “I enjoy using my voice as another instrument,” Matty’s preferred configuration is a trio: “Sometimes playing with a bigger band is a straight jacket, with a trio I can go crazy.” MattyTWall is headed toward the proverbial destination of the bluesmen: the crossroads. “I am like an elastic band pulled really tight, ready to go,” he says. “That’s how I feel about my music. A young man with an old soul: MattyTWall is connected to music with a wealth of history as he distills a diversity of genres into his own blues-influenced soul, jazz and rock signature. MattyTWall wrings raw emotions from single notes, stretching the strings of a LesPaul into sounds both persuasive and human. The decision to conclude a night of rawk and punk noise with some stinging, blue-eyed blues was deft, as Matty T Wall proved his technical chops by playing guitar behind his own back and maintaining a slick legato even when aggressively shredding all over his fretboard. Capably backed by some well-poised bass and a drummer who knew how to use his kit as a palette rather than simply an anvil, Wall’s Spillane-esque storytelling illuminated an atmospheric number packed with femme fatales and grimy machismo; one of the night’s most compelling moments. - Christopher James, Drum Media / themusic.au (Jul 30, 2013) In my 10 years of doing sound at the Perth Blues Club, MattyTWall may be the closest to what I was hoping to find at a Blues Club anywhere . A 3-piece that really knows how to play and a repertoire where originals hold their own against the classics; that and soulful playing with great guitar tone make MattyTWall a band you should go and check out soon! - Rik Van der Velde, Perth Blues Club (Jul 15, 2013) MattyTWall, an awesome blues guitarist from Australia - Lori Bumgarner, PanashStyle, Nashville, USA (Jul 24, 2012 Mighty Quinn Tavern – Tuart Hill Indigo Duck London Café and Bar – 9:30 pm G & G Acoustic Shenanigans Saturday May 31, 2014 Two Rocks Tavern Indigo Duck London Café and Bar – 9:30 pm G & G Acoustic Shenanigans Indi Bar – Hastings Bar, Scarborough – entry $20 Blue Shaddy Radio - 1422am Wagin Saturday Blues with Flea - 6pm to 11pm. Their sound is driven by relentless rhythms and searing steel licks. Jacqui-Anne always seems to be able to find another gear: moody, sassy, soaring – it’s all there. As a performer she is never less than 100% invested with an irresistible sense of self-abandon that most others can only dream about. She kicks butt – plain and simple! Lap steel guitarist Tim Halse is a firebrand and pioneer in his own right. He has developed a unique, double-slide approach to playing lap steel. His YouTube videos have featured on the ‘Steel Guitar Forum’ drawing praise from slide and lap players around the world. Greg Lewis on bass and John Perrella (drums) are a potent rhythm section. These guys wrote the book on blues construction - tension and release, shadow and substance, mild and muscle. Blues that tell a story, build emotion, and kick the black dog’s backside until its nose bleeds. Steely Blues cut their teeth the hard way… playing prisons.
