The number of times that we hear in a consultation: I dont eat too much protein, as I dont want big muscles. Such a comment is like saying Im building a house, but I wont use too many bricks as I dont want it to look too big. Yup, that made no sense at all did it? We educate our clients as to the truths about food and exercise, and the truth of the matter is that MOST of the clients who step through our doors (thats men AND women) are simultaneously UNDER and OVER eating. How is this possible? Just think of it this way: it is so much harder to overeat, as when youre full your body says STOP. Continue, and 9/10 times itll come right back up. On the flip side of the coin it is so easy to make yourself busy and ride through hunger pains- this is one way in which clients can under-eat. BUT ALSO if we take general eating habits, most lifestyles today require convenient food that doesnt hold us back from getting on with our day; and how has the food market responded to this? Snacks. Lots of snacks. Easy pick-me-up carbs. And if for optimum nutrition we need a balanced split of our macros (thats carbs, protein AND fats) then as a population we tend to overeat on carbs, and under-eat on protein... now can you see how you can simultaneously over and under eat? Moving back to the original point, protein is the material that our body uses to maintain and repair itself- so if we under-eat on these materials then how can we fix ourselves, or replace the old/damaged cells within us? The answer is that we cant, and therefore we cause our metabolism (the bodys ability to use calories) to drop as we lose muscle tissue. Ladies read and learn that protein is not bad, and in fact it is preferable to get adequate protein in your daily diet ESPECIALLY if you have weight loss goals. Trust us, eating more protein than you currently do will not make you look like a muscle man (wed be out of business if that was true!)
