cant match Melissa Elstons list of things most people dont know about me, but heres my best effort: 1) I’m the only living person whose stories have been published in the Washington Post, The Canyon News, Beckett Baseball Card Monthly and The Baptist Standard. (No one disputes this.) 2) I teamed up with Brad Baker to steal a vocabulary book from Mrs. Gist’s class in 1977 because she made such a big deal out of “These books will never leave this classroom!” She kept everyone after class at least 15 minutes when it turned up missing and I feared she might strip search us all. I’ll always be grateful to Tana Webb’s unwitting contribution. 3) I drove a race car at Amarillo’s Southwest Speedway in 1980-something. Just once. Three laps around the quarter-mile asphalt track. I finished last. 4) I watch “Project Runway.” And I like it. 5) I once prayed out loud in Sunday school for God to watch over Willie Mays. 6) I made baseball clown Max Patkin cry during an interview. I don’t remember the question or his answer, but I think about how sad he was every time I see him in “Bull Durham.” 7) My great uncle was a sheriff in Claude, Texas. He lived downstairs from the jail. My great aunt cooked all the prisoners’ meals. 8) I like listening to Bobby Goldsboro sing “Honey” and “Watching Scotty Grow.”
