cmdrr forum news National Level Sharing Meeting on Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation Posted on January 17, 2015 in English Kathmandu, 18th Dec, 2014. National Level Sharing Meeting on “Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction (CMDRR) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA)” was organized on 18th December 2014 at Hotel Marshyangdi, Thamel, Kathmandu, Nepal. The meeting was organized by five founding members of CMDRR Forum Nepal which are JCYCN, Hoste Hainse, WCDF, HIMAWANTI and HRELIC Nepal and funded by Cordaid, Netherland whereas implemented by Concern Universal Bangladesh as a part of sharing and experiencing “Role of Stakeholders on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction”. The main objective was to share information, knowledge and experiences on CMDRR, climate change, its impact, challenges and coping mechanisms adapted by local communities, government of Nepal and Nongovernmental organizations. Also, to explore new ideas for the future activities in collaborative action with different stakeholders adaptation and mitigation of disaster risk. More than 150 participants were participated in the programme representing from various NGOs, I/NGOs, CBOs, Media, academic institutions, private sectors and many others. Among the total participants, 40% were female and rests were male with a proportional representation from all groups and age of people. The programme was hosted and facilitated by Mr. TilottamPaudel, coordinator of CMDRR Forum Nepal, President JCYCN and a former secretary of Association of Youth Organization Nepal (AYON). The programme was inaugurated by Honorable Former Prime Minister and senior leader of CPN-UML, Mr. Madhav Kumar Nepal being a chief guest for the program. The guests and participants were welcomed by Ms. Nirmala Shrestha and introduced the objective of the program including its establishment, objectives, mission, vision, completed activities and plan for future. She mentioned that due to climate change and natural disaster poor vulnerable people are suffering lot in comparison to other more specifically children and senior citizens. Mr. HariDevkota presented a basic introduction of CMDRR forum mentioning about its establishment, achievement and further plans for addressing such issues and thanked to the organizers for organizing this kind of sharing meeting. He talked on the impact of climate change and global warming after 21 century which is beyond our imagination clarifying that 90% are affected in developing countries, mostly poor people. He also said that due to climate change and global warming new disease are appearing around the world and stressed the need of 52 thousand health workers alone in Nepal to combat the emerging new diseases. While inaugurating the programme, former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal said Climate change and Disaster risk is high in mountain region specially Nepal and we are not ready to face the challenge neither at local level nor at government level. He added we are lack in policy making and its implementation also. He also spoke about constitution making and its deadlock stating about the eleventh hour work procedure and hope that we get the constitution within 22 January 2015. Chief speaker Mr. Ganga lal Tuladhar former education minister and current CA member presented a thought provoking paper on “Disaster Scenario of Nepal-Way Forward”. Along the fact and figures and best practices around the world the stressed upon the prominent role of government and other stakeholders including CBOs, NGOs, in climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies. Further, he points out about the lacking of appropriate policy in Nepal mitigation and adaptation measures along with collective action from all sides. Similarly other speakers included Ms. Rupa Maharjan, Constituent assembly member, Dr. Kasim Shah, Coordinator of Nick Simmons Institute, Mr. Ranjan Kumar Dahal, Tribhuvan University, Mr.Abdul Hamid, Coordinator of CUB, Ms. WahidaBasha Ahmed, Program advisor of Curdaid, Netherland. All the speakers were agreed upon the need of research mechanism to understand the impact of climate change along with mitigation measure because the impact of climate change depends upon the economic, social and environmental aspects of a society. In the end a floor discussion was organized where participants presented their experiences, concerns and suggestions for the policy amendment regarding climate change and mitigation in the context of Nepal. Program Chair Person, Ms, Mridula Sharma Dhakal (President of WCDF) thanked chief guest, guests and participants representing different organization presented a commitment to work at local level for its optimum result and formally ended the programme. Various Newspapers, FM, Television and even e-news covered the programme from national and local level. Nepal Television, Radio Nepal, Kantipur Television, Kantipur Publication, Sagarmatha Television, AV News, Mountain Television etc. published and broadcast the program activities, information and news. Although the program was for few hours but the conclusion drawn from this program was highly appreciated. Every stakeholders came in the program were ready and want to play an effective role by joining hands each other with mutual coordination and cooperation for its mitigation and adaptation. CMDRR forum Nepal is working since 2010 on the Community Manage Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change issues. It is the louse network, 45 organization are joining this network.
