Ancient bird-like fossils identified as new species PETER KRANZ SCIENTISTS HAVE REVEALED the discovery of a strange, bird-like creature found at an archaeological site in the Simbu province of Papua New Guinea. It appears to be an ancient miniature proto-dinosaur species from the Cambrian period that was previously unknown to science. According to researchers, the odd-looking creature was an ancient relative of primitive birds that exist today. Their study, published today in the journal Natura Parodica, is the first full description of the prehistoric animal. Remains of the creature were found in the shale fossil beds at the foot of Mt Wilhelm. It is believed the animals were arboreal and climbed trees to fossick for berries, fruit and flowers. Although only less than a metre in length they were equipped with razor-sharp teeth and terrorised the ancient forests swinging from tree to tree uttering fearsome cries. The new species has been named Aprilis Foolasaurus.
