crossfit/cf-download/Foundations.pdf In case you wanted to educate yourself on where the olympic powerlifting and excessive kipping pull-ups are described in the cult programming. Theres definitely a section about achieving maximum ego points in relation to lifting weights, and it really emphasizes the competitive nature of the sport - you know, because EVERY person that walks into the gym MUST lift the same amount of weight regardless of their technical skills (for time, nonetheless). Because of course its always about lifting the most weight the fastest, not actually about the development of sound functional movement patterns fine tuned with skill-full practice. And yes, we all head to CrossFit to destroy our bodies with harmful repetitive movements...in the domains of running, rowing, gymnastics, olympic weightlifting, and a multitude of other movement vocabularies required to do this crazy thing called conditioning your body to survive the tasks of life that require pushing, pulling, jumping, and the really crazy one, squatting. No one EVER squats lower than 90 degrees right, because its totally bad for your knees. Obviously. (Im pretty sure anyone taller than 54 breaks parallel in a squat to get their cheeks to the toilet seat, but maybe Im way off on that one.) People, its a sport made out of OTHER SPORTS! We call it a muscle up, gymnasts call it mounting the rings and yet no one has a hate on campaign to keep gymnasts from practicing their crazy iron-cross shenanigans. Side note: do women even use the rings in competitive gymnastics? NEGATORY. 5 points CrossFit for encouraging equality opportunity fitness and bad-ass-ery to both genders. Were not concerned with other factors that contribute to a healthy human - you know, things like community, nutrition, and this really weird thing called self-esteem that gets cultivated with every workout logged, and every time someone shows up to get better at the stuff they suck at. Clearly no one needs practice at being accountable, and none of us benefit from pushing outside our comfort zone, often taking risks on a physical task and surprising ourselves with a positive outcome. I mean really guys, trying something that I couldnt do before, achieving it, and reflecting back on what I have accomplished is a total bummer. Realizing that there is a correlation between mindfulness, dedication, and a supportive community is totally DANGEROUS and we really should put an end to this nonsense before someone gets you know, too high up on themselves thinking that the world is their oyster, and that they are equipped with the physical fitness (and accompanying mental fortitude) to grind through the suck, and live a life they are proud of. To all those Ive invited to come hang out, know that it is simply because CrossFit is my happy place. I feel inspired, alive, invigorated and pretty much my best self. Why wouldnt I want to bring you there? My mom always told me you cant knock it until you try. And for the record, that was BEFORE she started CrossFit. (Boy am I glad she did...) Sorry to be so rant-y. Must be the CrossFit making me all assertive...
