#cryptex The Cryptex is the name for a portable vault and mechanical puzzle designed by Dan Brown, the author of The DaVinci Code in 2003. Coined from the combination of the words cryptology and codex, the cryptex uses “the science of cryptology” to secure and protect information or secrets written on parchment contained within. Within the novel, Dan Brown described the cryptex as a stone cylinder comprising six doughnut-sized disks of marble [that] had been stacked and affixed to one another within a delicate brass framework; end caps make it impossible to see inside the hollow cylinder. Each of the disks is carved with the entire alphabet and, since they can be rotated individually, the disks can be aligned to spell different five-letter words. The Metagrobologist find all puzzle locking mechanisms intriguing. Do you own a cryptex? What mechanical puzzle lock do you enjoy the most at the moment? Share your thoughts and links below.
