damn you NOAA, damn you. I guess no pre-work dawn patrols for most of August??? A compact low pressure near 50s, 140°W to the SSE of French Polynesia was nearly stationary 8/1-3, then a similar compact system unfolded 8/5-7 near 45°S, 130°W. The short fetch and marginal magnitude of the winds means no more than background level potential locally. The former is trending up at buoy 51004 Friday morning 8/9 and should hold over the weekend. The latter could fill in next Wednesday. Otherwise, tiny to small breaker from southern hemisphere trades should top the heights for select se-facing locations. Into the long range, the jet level ridge to the E to SE of New Zealand is predicted to hold beyond mid August, keeping the primary source zone for Hawaii surf between 180-200 degrees below average 8/15-21. A weak subtropical branch to the jet is setting up north of and over New Zealand with a series of surface lows predicted to track E to SE from the Tasman sea to the E of New Zealand. These systems are expected to remain weak and compact. The net result should be a change from dominant dribble out of the SE to SSE 8/9-16, to dominant dribble out of the SW to SSW 8/17-21.
