#day26 of #100daysofcinema Manhattan (1979) by Woody Allen R.I.P Gordon Willis, the cinematographer (‘The Godfather trilogy’ and ‘Annie Hall’) who recently passed away on the 18th May. Manhattan is probably one of my favorite Woody Allen romantic comedies. If you have watched any Woody Allen films, you know they are a band apart. Usually they star Woody Allen as Woody Allen, which is not such a bad thing if you start enjoying his erratic rants about society and art and everything else. And there is also Diane Keaton in there somewhere, who has to be one of the best actresses for me. The story revolves around Isaac (Allen), who tries to find love in all the wrong places. Moreover he struggles to find someone who he would love as much as the city he lives in, New York. This movie is literally a love letter to New York with its majestic cinematography by Gordon Willis. Shot, by choice, in black and white and in a widescreen format, this film simple looks beautiful irrespective of the story. Definitely worth a watch, if you enjoyed Annie Hall. And keep an eye out for that iconic Brooklyn Bridge shot…. oh that sweet sweet framing.
