dear smith college, please tell me why you find it so problematic for a trans male at smith to host a prospective student. womens college or not, trans men and non-binary smithies are here, and belong in this community. to call them up after a prospective student hosting interest meeting as anyone who is male-identified and tell them that they cannot host someone- is utterly astounding to me. not only is this unacceptably discriminatory and isolating towards trans men at smith, but it is also a cowardly attempt at hiding the fact that smith college isnt exactly what is portrayed in your brochures and catalogs; that it is populated by butches and queers and trans men who, by the way, are equally as important as the straight girls and blonde collegiate-looking women that make parents feel comfortable about sending their daughters to an all-womens college. just so you know, more has happened with lesbian smithies hosting other prospective lesbian students overnight. my good friend Jason McGourty was denied hosting a prospective student because of his gender identity and in his own words, he thanks you for not allowing men to host but doing nothing about the cis girls and butch girls and BDOCs (big dykes on campus) who can be far more bro than [he is]. thank you for upholding gender stereotypes and roles instead of questioning them. thank you for assuming the only form of masculinity is inherently threatening. well done, smith. well done.
