, decided to move up and take some pictures for my friend Howard ( water polo Howard ). I had brought my camera in the off chance I had the opportunity to shoot some impromptu shots. Didnt know a thing about Buffet except my friend liked him. The day was blistering hot, so between sets they were shooting water cannons at the crowd to cool them down. The excess water created a huge mud pit in front of the stage which at this point in the proceedings people vacated. All that it took was wading through an enormous chasm of foot deep mud. Got right up to the stage and Jimmy Buffet was great. Have been a fan ever since. Decided to stay and shoot the headliners if possible. It was tricky trying to keep my camera dry as they were shooting the water cannons directly at us. Just turned my back and hunched over the best I could. Was able to protect the camera form the direct spray but the condensation got it. There were 350, 000 tightly packed people at the event and this combined with the heat and water created a virtual steam bath. This fogged my lens up and prevented me from shooting further. Did get some shots of Santana and Jackson Browne. Jackson was a handsome young devil at this point and many of the California girls showed their appreciation by watching his set without their shirts. There was this one girl to my left, up on somebodies shoulders whose cup runneth over. Nearly put out my eye. I can remember Jackson looking at her , looking at me and smiling . His message - Its good to be a rock star. My returning smile suggested Hell, its good to be a lifeguard. Fleetwood Mac were the biggest band in the world at the time of this concert, so can remember I was very excited to see them up close. I was surprised Christine McVie needed the sheet music to play some of her own songs. Was close enough to hear them discussing such things. Stevie and Lindsey were brilliant that night. Rolling Stone published a picture of the throng. Im the 9 foot tall guy in an Army Ranger hat. Was on of the loudest concerts I ever attended. The people in San Bernardino, 15 miles away could hear the show and Im sure my ears suffer to this day. Was thrilled for the show to end as I hadnt peed since leaving the house that morning and I was holding my spot. My lens never dried out and I didnt have a zoom lens for several years. The entire concert was filmed and have been waiting for years for it to be released.
