deep day in halifax. i never thought i was find myself with tears at Pier 21 in Halifax, Nova Scotia its bitter sweet. you know. how quickly i was able to access my British/Canadian Immigrant family from the Aquantania. I walked into the family history center at the peer, gave my grandfathers name...and there it was. my entire family, including my mother. I bought the print out for $15. My mom is so excited. She has never been to the place of her birth, or her landing in Canada since 1948. I have now been to both. The tears were memories of my grandfather Arthur Bell who was a Chef in the military and one of sweetest, funniest men Ive ever known. Hes the only grandfather i ever had, because my dads parents died young in the south. The bitter sweet, is the way I, and most of my friends of AFRICAN and NATIVE descent cannot trace our roots with this kind of ease. My first painting was about the duality of my Atlantic Ocean. The two very ships that wld eventually make me, me. When i did my first conceptual art installation I created a Message Board for the Middle Passage. Dont we need a place to tell our stories? To find our ancestors. To cry because we feel connected to a place, a people, a history. I was so moved just seeing all my aunts and uncles names. You feel human when you come full circle with your beginning. I havent been to Goree Island yet, but i plan to go. I want to have this experience on both sides of my family tree. jessica Care moore
