The decision of the Ferguson grand jury to not bring charges against the police officer responsible for the death of an unarmed black teenager was a blow to all of us and our sense of justice. And I need your help right now because we cant let it happen again. Over 117,000 of us signed a petition calling for a special prosecutor to oversee the Michael Brown investigation. It was clear that Prosecutor McCullochs history of bias, racial insensitivity and close relationship with the police could not provide the impartial prosecution this tragedy deserved. Will you sign our new petition to make sure this injustice wont be repeated? Despite our pleas, McCulloch refused to step aside and Governor Jay Nixon failed to take action. And, while well never know if a different prosecutor would have provided a different result, well never be able to rid ourselves of the feeling that something just wasnt right in Ferguson. But it doesnt have to be that way. While Bob McCullochs record made his office particularly unfit to investigate this crime, similar instances of bias and favoritism are all too common when local prosecutors investigate the misconduct of local police. Their close relationship creates a natural conflict of interest thats obvious to us all. Thats why Ill be introducing legislation in Missouri to require the appointment of an independent prosecutor to oversee all investigations into police abuse that involve a loss of life. While it wont fix everything thats wrong with our system, its a small step toward ensuring future Mike Browns receive the justice they deserve.
