effighters.org.za/ #EFF CONDEMNS THE HARASSMENT OF #EFF AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS THAT ATTEND #EFF GATHERINGS BY POLICE SUPPORTED ANC HOOLIGANS 06, October, 2013 Economic Freedom Fighters condemns the open targeted disruptions of our meetings and harassment of people who attend them by the rented police supported hooligans of the ANC. On Thursday, in Ledig, North West, EFF had a community meeting in which a small group of ANC members (not more than six people) wearing ANC T-shirts came and sought to disrupt the gathering. This they did in full view of the police who did nothing as ordinary members of the community in attendance were harassed by howling and aggressive hooligans of the ANC. After the meeting of the EFF in the University of South Africa in which the same thing happened, we released a statement calling on the ANC in whose name its members disrupt EFF to speak out as a law abiding organisation. To this day, not even a single structure of its multiple layered organs has said a word, thus indirectly or directly encouraging unlawful activities. A member of the EFF in Ledig, fighter Nthabiseng Mollo was arrested in the early hours of Friday morning, just after 12h00 AM for what the police called illegal gathering. The police held fighter Nthabiseng Mollo in custody refusing to even charge her for some time. As we asked for what her charges were, police claimed to be transporting her to Mogwase Police station in order the take her prints. When police were supposed to get the docket to court early morning, they were seen under a tree, where they stood outside doing nothing. This was a clear act of delaying the entire process, so she spends more hours in custody. All these are ways to subject EFF members and all those who associate with it into silence. They harass us, intimidate us and in some instances even fire us from jobs simply by being EFF. Our community meetings, which have been taking place in the North West in preparation of the Launch in Marikana, have been subject to police harassment. There have been attempts to declare them illegal, yet these are simple one hour community meetings like any community meeting that takes place in which no single police in the country has declared illegal. It seems sections of the police have taken upon themselves to abuse their position to undermine the constitutional rights to freedoms of association, movement and expression of EFF and all those who support us. We reject, in no equivocal terms, these actions by sections of the police as unconstitutional. Economic Freedom Fighters has the right to exist and disagree with anyone it deems fit. We have the right to create our platforms and canvass our ideas, no matter how unpopular they are with those who are in power. We also have the right not to be disturbed in our gatherings, since we too respect the rights of others to meet and do not disrupt their meetings, no matter how much we think their ideas perpetuate our people’s suppression and bastardisation. To defeat them, we canvass in self-initiated platforms, and will partake in the democratic elections in 2014 for a total victory. It is not the place of police to ‘control’ our gatherings, there are even no constitutional right to ‘give permission’. They get involved on the basis that we give them notice that a gathering has been arranges of the proportions and nature appearing in legislations, like the ones we have done with the Launching role in Marikana. Theirs is to assist us have the gatherings, that is, make sure that the constitutional rights to freedoms of association and expression in a democratic society are protected and enhanced. Finally, whilst others may be rejoicing and holding their small corners in silence, we wish to send a strong caution to the South African society that the usage of police to settle political differences is a dangerous tendency that is undoing our democracy. Nevertheless, we encourage fighters not to lose faith, to be brave and keep up the good fight as we always knew since the Marikana Massacre that the government of the day is intolerant to those who differ with it. Our program threatens them the most, precisely because it is just and embraced by the absolute poplar majority of our people.
