{events of my time} EBIRA MEDIA WEEK: A WORTHWHILE EVENT The gathering of Ebira Community Media Practitioners/Journalists last week Saturday at the Hill-Top Guest House in Okene City was nothing short of ‘a worthwhile event.’ According to Comrade Abdulrahaman Idris, a trustworthy brother and a personal friend who coordinated that memorable event; ‘the sole aim was to gather great minds, leaders, sons and daughters of Ebiraland to celebrate the core value of projecting Ebira image.’ In his two-paged speech, Comrade Abdulrahaman captured in summary the justifiable essence of the occasion. He accurately enumerated the various feats attained so far by the two private organizations; ESS Project Concept Ltd in conjunction with Ebiraview News paper that jointly organized and sponsored the befitting programme. It was quite revealing for me to have come across such a wonderful private outfits that are voluntarily and extra-ordinarily committed to promoting, propagating and sustaining the rich values and glory of Ebira as a Community. They have also, according to the Coordinator over the years worked assiduously with other notable civil society groups and like-minded Comrades to unearth the lost heritages of Ebiraland, refine their beauty and propel their essence to the Ebira People, the nation and the outside world. What a marvelous idea! Despite my strenuous routine all around last weekend in the ancient city of Okene, I have refused to succumb to the pressure of hanging my soft but tough ‘Pen’ this week in order to have a brief rest ahead of our usual office exigencies. It was on that basis I decided to dedicate today’s edition to that epoch and worthwhile event. The well-organized event was of two main segments; the first was a memorial lecture titled, “The Role of Media in the Society” dedicated to the blessed memory of my mentor, our mentor, Late Comrade Dr. Habib Angulu Sanni, and the second was the presentation of meritorious awards to worthy and well-deserved sons and daughters of Ebiraland who had generously contributed to our Community development with distinguished careers in various areas of life. Apart from the obvious fact that Okene was agog during the weekend with personalities of all sorts from different works of life due to two major activities that took place simultaneously in the City, the Media Programme was well-attended. Those who could not possibly be in attendance were duly represented. Meanwhile the same day witnessed the Grand Finale of momentous one-week activities that marked Honourable Ahmed Tijani Damisa’s special Constituency Empowerment Project which was generally adjudged as best of its kinds, hence this columnist can attest to that and will surely reflect on it in the shortest period of time. However I have considered it very significant to bring to our notice and knowledge today, three bits of information; 1) the need to appreciate and patronize the intellectual property (written materials) of this great Icon, Late Dr. H.A. Sanni, especially his numerous books most of which were on display during that occasion. 2) the urgent need to embrace wholeheartedly the idea of giving greater commitment to quality education of our beloved children and the entire society as it was highly emphasized by various speakers at the occasion. 3) last but most importantly, is the idea of partnering with these great and illustrious sons of ours who are painstakingly doing everything legitimately possible to project the real socio-cultural and economic values and customs of Ebira Community through the viable instrumentality of their private organizations; ESS Project Concept Ltd, Ebiraview News paper, Ebicom newspaper, National Image Magazine etc. at least for the sake of encouragement. In as much as I am very proud to be associated with the progressive minds like you; Alh. Suleiman Damisa, CEO of ESS Project Concept Ltd, Mallam Muhammed Sadiq, Editor, National Image Magazine, Mallam Kabir Ismail, Editor, Ebiraview News paper and the rest of you, I also pray to Almighty God to bless, guide, protect, keep strengthening you, and as well reward you all abundantly for a beautiful job well-done. THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES!
