They observed Easter Sunday on the Lord’s Day nearest the vernal equinox, as this was the time the sun impregnated Mother Earth, resurrecting life. Their “detestable rituals” included prayers to a Madonna with child, the mother of god, and mass, replete with sun-shaped wafers. In their “abhorrent rites,” they wept forty days for the suffering of Tammuz, the son of the sun, instituting Lent. Everything was based upon a politicized clerical class who claimed to speak for God, enriching and empowering themselves through the institution of “detestable idolatrous worship.”
