feedthechildren.org One of the most important things, and THE thing that kept my sanity while I was in Afghanistan, was the children. They looked up to us, and were very impressionable. Over time, when a fire-fight broke out close to home, my usual survival instinct would be overpowered by an instinct to protect the future of this world, and that was found in a kid we named Elmo. Elmo got his name 1: because there was no way in heck we were going to pronounce his real name correctly (or maybe sub-consciously we needed that emotional separation from them) and 2: because every time he laughed you could swear it was Elmo from Sesame Street. He was only maybe 2 feet off the ground, maybe about 5? He got paid to move the trash bags near our howitzer. One day I came out, and this kid had his little burlap hat, and was scooping something out of the trash into it. (Take note, I was on alot of energy drinks during this time, whatever those little ones were called from the chow hall and Redbull either shipped from the states Colbyandnancy Cryan thanks! These kept me awake when I didnt want to sleep, and asleep long enough to miss morning chow most of the time) He looked a bit scared at me when I saw him, I see him putting boiled eggs from the trash into his hat. I asked him what he was doing with those eggs, he said his family was hungry so he was keeping the eggs. Now, right this moment, please go over to your trashcan, look for something that was thrown away but could have still been eaten, and put it in your mouth. Cant do it? To this day, I still waste food, I cook too much, I eat whatever my fatty little body can actually take, then throw the rest away later so I can make something new because I dont want to eat anything twice in a row.... that changes now. This kid didnt care where that food came from, as long as he and his family got to eat. I pray that he learned the good values from the bad from us, and I pray that he is still alive and well. I didnt write this to TELL you to sponsor a kid, or ASK you to sponsor a kid. There are many ways to help make a better world, this is just one that is very dear to me. These children, of all nations, are our future. If you dont want to sponsor a foreign child, sponsor a american one. If you would rather donate to something else altogther, something that you are connected to or just want to do privately, please do it. For a Christian, a tithe is 10% of your pay, it belongs to the Works of God. If your not a Christian yet, 10% is so much to kids just like this, and others. This is how you can start making a difference. Please consider it.
