feminism is not a dirty word. there isnt anything particularly radical about it, although there may be those who approach it radically. if we go back to the very beginning of feminism, with the movement for womens right to vote, you can see what its really about. its about equality, about questioning how our system favors certain people while excluding others. it encourages change, and helping others find the change they need. when we say check your privilege it doesnt mean we dont see that youve had your struggles as well. it only means that you should look and see how you may have benefitted from the current system. really look at it! and try to understand how it might adversely affect others in a different way. you wont find it by yourself. you will need to reach out to others that have lived differently and actually find out how they feel. checking your privilege doesnt imply youve suffered any less or more than anyone else. it only suggests that you should see the differences in society for what they are. attempt to reach out! from this, you should find greater understanding of *everyones* struggles. and this goes for male, female, black, white, gay, straight, or trans* or poor or rich... observerobserved. ultimately: inclusion, evaluation, critical thinking, listening, recognizing your qualifications, stepping aside and letting those qualified speak for themselves. thats what i think everyone everywhere should strive for, and i truly believe thats what feminism is all about.
