for every woman taught only to be seen and never to be heard valued as an aesthetic accessory outwardly objectified critiqued grotesquely as if a piece of artwork I write for every sister silenced by violence muted by shame held captive by deafening despair and paralyzing pain I write for every girl taken from families stolen from childhood to be traded and enslaved trafficked for the carnal pleasures of men I write for every woman stoned killed maimed by injustice because her word never mattered never counted I write for every sister struggling to make ends meet on her own without partner family or friends a lonely island without community I write for every girl kept home from school who never learned to read or to write because some think an education is wasted on a woman I write for every person thriving into the self they are inside of or outside of a woman’s body claiming their authentic identity crossing lines to bravely become I write for every woman defying odds being doing accomplishing thinking anyway with resilient abandon I write for every girl who invents composes cures dances solutions to problems lifetimes beyond her years who kindles the fire within her I write for every woman who still believes in her own magic I write for every one who wants to and doesn’t know how I write for the woman radiant despite her wear the one I see reflected in every mirror I write ~jenuine 3-8-2014 International Womyn’s Day
