found an old homework assignment ....thnik i could of been a writer. Claude Curry Intro to Business 1/29/2010 Autobiography On March 26th, 1985 I (CJ Curry III) was born to Tamara and Claude Curry Jr, at Saint Francis Hospital in Hartford, CT. I lived the early part of my life growing up in East Hartford, CT and it didn’t take long before I noticed something about myself that would soon shape a major part of my personality for the rest of my life. You see I was born to a white mother and a black father. Growing up in East Hartford in the early 90’s it was far and few between to see someone with my mixture of heritage. At the tender age of 7 I learned firsthand that the world was not too fond of people of different cultures. One day I was walking back home after an afternoon of Sega Geneses playing at my friend’s house when I noticed a rickety, grubby old man walking towards my direction. This eerie old man was hard not to notice and ignore because he was erratically waving a walking cane in the air and yelling out some type of verbiage that was unclear to me until he approached closer. As he did get closer, looking back at it I wonder what compelled me to stay on the path I was walking and why didn’t caution and fear whisk me to the other side of the street; it must have been a mixture of curiosity and fate that kept me anchored along the path of certain despair. As he got closer I was able to make out what he was saying, “GET RID OF THE NIGGERS AND SPICKS, GET RID OF THE NIGGERS AND SPICKS”. As he got closer I noticed he was walking straight towards me as if he saw me as nothing but air in his way. Before he got close enough to walk over me I condensed my body against a bush in front of someone’s house and he leaned over me and uttered, “We are gonna get rid of you. You little Spick” and then he walked away. When I reached my house my parents were outside on the porch with a look of disbelief on their faces. I walked up to them and asked what is a spick? They looked at me in a way I will never forget. It was a look that almost said more about the situation and what lesson I soon had to learn than any combination of words could describe. They were outside when the outlandish old man was yelling these obscene remarks and they told me that he was crazy, and stupid. Crazy they said because he was fighting a losing cause and people like him are fading away in this ever-growing world, and my father jokingly added he was stupid because, “He called you a spick and you’re a nigger”. A humorous tone to a moment when animosity should have been at its peak is a lesson I would hold on to forever. We moved to Hartford, CT during the summer of 1995 to take care of my great grandfather and this put an effect I believe on my outlook towards education. It was evident very soon that not to many took education that serious and I fell victim to this ignorant ideology and by the time I moved and started going to school in Manchester, CT it was too late. I developed a bad habit when it came to everything educational and even thought my parents would try to preach me in the right direction their liberal approach to parenting and free choice attitude towards our decisions left my young and arrogant decisions to win out. Soon after I graduated high school with an overall GPA of 1.88 I found myself struggling to find a steady job that paid me what I felt was an adequate amount of money to suffice the needs of a young male trying to live the lifestyle of rappers and actors I saw on TV. I went through a slew of jobs, sixteen if I can count correctly; and this was within a time frame of about 5 years. I worked as a cashier and carriage guy at Shaw’s supermarket, a factory worker in a juice plant, Bouncer at a night club, a numerous amount of retail jobs like Kay Jewelers, Proactive solutions, and Modell’s Sporting Goods. I even had a quick 23 day stint in jail. Finally after a subtle phase of depression set in my girlfriend pressured me to go back to school. She wasn’t the first person to suggest this to me but after working all these bottom feeder position jobs and talking to the most diverse pool of individuals anyone could ever meet I realized that life is nothing more than a game. A game that is set up with a specific set of rules and like any other game it has winners and it has losers. It has superstars and it has role players and it has people that can’t take the game so much that they quit all together; and like any other game it doesn’t matter what color of skin you have or where you come from but if you put in the hard work to compete in the game then you will be successful. My father always told me this but I guess you have to struggle before you can progress, kind of like having to touch a burning stove to see how hot it is even though someone else told you it was hot already. So I went to MCC with the most auspicious attitude and viola!! Dean’s list my first semester. I found such enjoyment utilizing my natural talent to write and creatively placing the written word, I thought my future was education as an English teacher. I wanted to help young kids like myself that were in less than perfect conditions find a passion for education. So after my first two semester at MCC I transferred to Western Connecticut State University in 2007. Besides meeting new people and a very different breed of people much different from the blue collar people in the central part of CT I hated this school. So I finished the year there and went back to MCC but with a new focus on Business. I decided to move away from a career as a teacher once the economy collapsed and teachers were getting laid off left and right. During this time I was working retail which was also hit hard by the economic down turn and I was struggling to even pay a cell phone bill. I was lucky enough to land a job at IKON Office Solutions as a contract administrator in the billing department. My experience there has only furthered my interest in working in business. My ultimate goal is to get my associates in Business Administration, Accounting, Marketing, and a certificate in Public Relations. I hope to find a long term job that will allow me to manage projects related to marketing and product advancement. I would also love to be head of a public relations department and have the ability to find unique and abstract ways for companies to give back to their communities.
