from the inbox: September 2013 • Issue No. 38 Responding to Tragedy in Washington, D.C… BY TIM SCHMIDT - USCCA FOUNDER Fellow Friend and Responsibly Armed American, With a rash of tragic mass shootings in recent times—the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C. being the latest home to such heartbreak—it is sometimes easier to give in to the sadness we feel over the events that transpired than it is to fight harder against the evil that exists around us. As responsible gun owners, we shake our heads as the words we hear all too often start flying among the media and anti-gunners alike. What you and I know to be true (and the message we must always strive to share with the unenlightened) is that guns do not kill people. Evil people kill people. Ten, twenty, even fifty years from now, people will not remember the names of handguns or rifles or shotguns used to commit crimes. But I guarantee our nation will not soon forget James Holmes or Wade Michael Page or Adam Lanza. They will not soon forget Aaron Alexis. And why is that? Because these evil, deranged men are solely responsible for the loss of precious human life. But now is not the time for debate. Rather, it is a time to reflect on the reality of the world we live in: a world that is filled with both good and bad. A world where it is becoming more and more important to responsibly arm ourselves. After all, at the end of the day we are the ones responsible for our own safety and the safety of our loved ones. If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably been asking yourself, “When will it stop?” The truth of the matter is that it won’t. Evil exists, and terrible people will continue to do terrible things. What you and I can do is be prepared. We can carry on in the best way we know how: with a concealed gun and a silent but powerful proclamation in our hearts: “NOT on MY watch!” On behalf of everyone here at the USCCA, our thoughts and prayers are with the wounded and the families of those who we’ve lost.
