Winter Storm Gorgon: Tuesday Forecast weather and high temperatures for Tuesday. This fast-moving system has already prompted winter storm watches, warnings, and advisories for parts of 22 states from Washington all the way to New Jersey, as well as the District of Columbia. As of 11:15 p.m. EST Monday, 18 of those states plus D.C. were still under at least one of those alerts. Lets get into whats happening now and what we expect next. Later, for you hardcore weather geeks, well get into the science behind why this is happening. Snow and Ice Reports Snow has already blanketed parts of the Northwest and much of the northern Rockies. In the Cascade passes of western Washington, warmer air changed snow over to rain before Gorgon moved out, prompting avalanche warnings that remain in effect there. Avalanche warnings also have been issued for several mountain ranges in the northern Rockies. Gorgons first target was the state of Washington, where 11.2 inches of snow fell at Chief Joseph Dam in central Washington. Freezing rain fell in central Washington as well, with Mazama reporting up to 0.5 inch of freezing rain. Leavenworth reported a few tree branches down and localized power outages due to ice accumulation. Gorgon also brought flooding rainfall to parts of western Washington, causing mudslides that have left people stranded and roads closed. (MORE: Winter Storm Gorgon News, Storm Reports) Locally very heavy snowfall hit the mountains of Wyoming and Montana. In the Tetons of Wyoming, Grand Targhee reported 45.8 inches of snow in the 32-hour period ending 1 p.m. MST Monday. In northwest Montana, 25.8 inches fell near Columbia Falls between 10 a.m. MST Sunday and 10 a.m. Monday. Idahos top total was an estimated 20.1 inches at Pine Creek Pass, which is 38 miles east of Idaho Falls. In the Plains and Midwest, top snowfall totals by state as of 11 p.m. CST Monday included 3 inches in Beulah, North Dakota; 5.5 inches in Brandon, South Dakota; 4.5 inches in Blue Earth, Minnesota; 7.8 inches at Ankeny, Iowa, in the suburbs of Des Moines; 5.7 inches in Canton, Illinois; 1.5 inches in Crown Point, Indiana; and 1 inch in Gillingham, Wisconsin. (MORE: Current Interactive Radar) Forecast Timeline Monday night: Snow continues to zip east across the southern Great Lakes region and portions of the Ohio Valley, reaching the Appalachians of West Virginia and Pennsylvania after midnight. Conditions will deteriorate quickly as the snow moves in with this fast-moving storm. Tuesday: Gorgon will lose some of its punch as it moves into the Northeast, but some light snow is expected for the morning commute in Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C., with 1 to 2 inches possible. Similar conditions will exist during the morning rush for cities farther inland such as Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, and Allentown, though the snow will start a little earlier there. New York City may see a dusting Tuesday morning. Flurries and snow showers are possible in New England, but we expect little if any accumulation. Tuesday night: Gorgon zips eastward out to sea, but lake-effect snows should kick off in its wake across the entire Great Lakes region. Snowfall Forecast: West Additional snowfall is expected in the West but isnt directly related to Winter Storm Gorgon. Snowfall Forecast: Midwest, Northeast Enlarge Snowfall Forecast: Midwest, Northeast Note: Some of the snowfall depicted in the Great Lakes region will be at least partly from lake-effect snow through Monday, well before Winter Storm Gorgon arrives. Gorgon will move out of the Plains quickly Monday night as it zips east of the Mississippi River. Still, snowfall rates could reach 1 inch per hour in the heart of the snow over parts of Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. At 1 inch per hour, it becomes difficult for road crews to keep roads clear, as the snow tends to accumulate faster than they can plow it. Temperatures are in the single digits and teens in many areas, further limiting the effectiveness of chemical road treatments (salt, brine, etc.) Fortunately, winds are much lighter during this phase of the storm than they were over the Plains, so blowing and drifting will not be as much of a problem. The fast movement of the storm should prevent the snow from piling up to great depths, so road conditions should improve fairly quickly once the storm moves out of a given area and road crews have a chance to scrape the roads one last time. (FORECAST: Chicago | Indianapolis | Pittsburgh) Major interstates affected Monday night include, but are not limited to: Interstate 70 from Effingham, Illinois, to Baltimore Interstate 74 from Davenport, Iowa (the Quad Cities) to Cincinnati Interstate 80 from Des Moines, Iowa, to Youngstown, Ohio Interstate 55 from Chicago to Springfield, Illinois Interstate 57 from Chicago to Effingham, Illinois Interstate 65 from Gary, Indiana, to Columbus, Indiana Interstate 71 from Cincinnati to Cleveland Interstate 75 from Cincinnati to Detroit Interstate 79 from Charleston, West Virginia, to Pittsburgh Only light snow is expected from Winter Storm Gorgon over the Northeast. That said, lake-effect snow falling in the wake of Winter Storm Frona before Gorgons arrival, and to a lesser extent after Gorgons departure Tuesday night, will add to the snow cover east and/or southeast of each of the five Great Lakes. (FORECAST: Erie | Buffalo | Syracuse) Since this snow will be coming during a Tuesday morning commute for Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, it may cause more impact than a 1- or 2-inch snow typically would. Temperatures will be firmly in the 20s Tuesday morning, helping the snow to stick rather than melt on pavement. Some drivers along the I-95 corridor havent had much experience with snow this season. For instance, Philadelphia has only recorded 0.1 inch of snow – a far cry from the 20.2 inches theyd had through Jan. 4 in the winter of 2013-14. All the major cities from Boston to Washington have had below-average snowfall so far this season. On the other hand, the I-95 corridor in Maine has seen plenty of snow; Bangor and Caribou are each more than 20 inches above average for the season to date. Maine, however, can expect little or none of the white stuff from Winter Storm Gorgon.Winter Storm Gorgon To Dump a Swath of Snow From Northern Rockies to East Coast The fast moving Clipper system that is Winter Storm Gorgon will put down a long swath of snowfall as it races eastward across the nation through Tuesday afternoon. As much as 8 inches of snow could fall in a relatively short period of time across the Central Plains through this evening. The system will lose some of its punch as it heads to the eastern seaboard Tuesday. However, places like Washington DC through Baltimore and Philadelphia will be in line for a couple inches of snow Tuesday, causing travel problems in those cities. The system will move off the East Coast Tuesday night. In the wake of Gorgon lake-effect snow will fire up again under arctic west to northwest flow. The lake-effect will not be considered part of Gorgon. It could produce narrow bands of very heavy snowfall and I would not be surprised for some areas to receive 2 to 3 feet of snow through the end of the week as the lakes continue to produce snowfall under the arctic flow. (MORE: Winter Storm Gorgon Forecast) Next Clipper Poised to Race Across the Great Lakes Thursday Into Friday The next Clipper will take a track farther north than Gorgon and produce a swath of snow from Minnesota through Michigan to New England in the Thursday through Friday time frame. Right now it looks like snowfall totals will be in a general 3 to 6 inch range, just below warning criteria to name the storm. However, the air will be exceptionally cold and that could mean higher snowfall totals overall.light rain diffrent parts of those arew western bc canada usa mexcio eastern canada 40% chance of light rain 1-3 inches of light rain heavy rain for vancouver bc canada northern idaho state southern mexcio southern texas state 60-100% heavy rain 3-12 inches of rain flooding more like lee vancouver bc canada washingtion state southern state winter snow storm for alaska state bc canada western alberta canada montana state northern wy state all waynorthern nebraska state western sd nd state 4 great lake area gary fort wayne indania northernohio michigan state parts of ontario canada west virgina virgina state maryland state pa state ny state yupper eastern state quebec and eastern canada canada 6-20 inches of snow blowing and drifting snow visibilty be at 0 very dangerous drving and snow pack and whiteout and icy roads condition bizzard warning for nu canada northern quebec canada 3-6 inches of snow blowing and drifting snow visibilty be at 0 very dangerous drving and snow pack whiteout and icy roads condition lake effect snow for 4 great lake area for gary and fort wayne indania northern ohio state michigan state soo ste marie michigan state and soo ste marie ontario canada wawa whiteriver all way down mattawa parry sound huntvilles graveshurst orilla barrie grey bruce ontario canada southern ontario canada eastern ontario canada western pa state bufflao james town rochester watertown ny state eastern ontario canada 3-12 inches of snow blowing and drifting snow visibilty be at 0 very dangerous drving and snow pack and whiteout and icy roads condition snowfall for higher mountain or flatland area for alaska state yukon canada nwt canada nu canada western canada idaho wy state montana state nd and sd state nebraska minnsota 4 great lake area for indania ohio michigan state ontario canada west virgina northern virgina state maryland washington dc rhonde island delaware nj state pa state new england state ny state upper eastern state quebec and eastern canada 3-12 inches of snow blowing and drifting snow visibilty be at 0 very dangerous drving and snow pack and whiteout and icy roads condition frezzing rain warning for southern bc canada 1-3 inches of frezzing rain very dangerous drving icy roads condition high wind warning for western alaska state nwt canada nu canada parts of western canada minnsota state upper mid western state all way western state all way down texas western oklanhoma kansas nebraska state iowa missouri arkansas eastern sea broad state tn state ky state west virgina 4 great lake area il state michigan state ontario canada pa state ny state new england state upper eastern state quebec canada eastern canada 20 or 30 mph winds winds windchill warning for alaska state all way nu canada western canada minnsota state upper mid western state wy state colorado kansas nebraska iowa missouri 4 great lake area wisconsin il state indania ohio michigan state ontario canada western pa state ny state quebec canada windchill be at -30 or 0 very cold weather for yall frost warning for yukon canada all way nu canada western canada minnsota upper mid western state all way up 4 great lake area wisconsin il state indania ohio michigan state ontario canada western oregon all way texas all way up missouri il indania ohio west virginand virgina maryland pa state ny st quebec canada black road icy condition very dangerous drving on icy bridge condition foggy or ice foggy for western canada washington state oregon idaho montana wy state all way down texas state florida state all way eastern canada visibilty be at 0-2 miles very dangerous drving and foggy ore ice foggy condition right till by morning lift off by afternoon be caution keep eyes on it yall tune weather channel weather network wx cb radio scanner weather radio cell phone or desktop laptop tablet weather yall be safe drive safe god bless yall bigger both thumbs up drivers everybody else here :) 10-4
