greetings from the compulsive new yorker. three theater & filmmakers have died in the last 10 years – champions of the just American Democracy. Mike Nichols, Arthur Miller and Elia Kazan. i wish you a good measure of unreasoned faith that this is the best of all possible worlds. welcome to another inward journey vlog. see more at jangero Mike Nichols 1931-2014 The political and moral values of his film and theater works are high. he lights the dark underside of America – championing the rebellious, the outsider. they are voices of social justice legislation with which the Roosevelts fought the robber barons of the last century. now that the Republicans control two thirds of states, the senate and the house, they will try to roll back or privatize social security, medicare, voter rights, anti-trust laws, and Affordable Health Care – all socialist programs that deprive the rich legislative control and diminish the wealth gap. Miller’s ‘Death of a Salesman’, Kazan’s ‘On the Waterfront’ and ‘The Graduate’ bring light to the outsider in America. In this play/film, the just-graduated from college, anglo-named Benjamin Braddock, cast as the jewish Dustin Hoffman, an underdog, wins the prize. In the TimesTalk interview with Mike Nichols, from last year, it was clear, that casting Hoffman as Ben, is what makes this film a modern morality tale – unambitious young man of average looks, short stature, wins the princess. passion wins the heart, not good anglo looks, money, and cow-towing to parents. another of Nichol’s theatrical directorial works is memorable, ‘Death of a Salesman’ – here Willy Loman is a burnt-out salesman in the dog-eat-dog American marketplace. this drama’s anti-capitalist overtones punished Miller with a place on the McCarthy black list. there are so many cross-over dynamics in these works that reflect the present white vs brown, the haves vs have-nots, the capitalist vs socialist stand-off in American politics. https://vimeo/113262728
