gud luck maritime schools .all over the philippines.. and also to our school.. CHED, Marina to close substandard maritime schools in January Posted by: Agent Tinig on Nov 20, 2014 The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) are set to phase out several marine higher education institutions (MHEIs) in the country that have fallen short of European standards. According to a report on GMA News TV’s Balitanghali, CHED and MARINA will release in January a list of schools to be closed down. The report added that authorities found that at least half of the total 93 maritime schools in the country were substandard. Earlier, the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) warned that it may cancel the country’s accreditation for Filipino seamen to work in Europe, should the Philippines fails to pass international standards, the report said. The report noted that of the 400,000 Filipino seamen in the whole world, there are 80,000 working in Europe. Meanwhile, students in enrolled in schools to be phased out are allowed to graduate, but they would need to take additional courses to qualify for the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (or STCW). —Amanda Fernandez/NB, GMA News
