had a discussion the other day that triggered a thought I just cant shake: If you ask me a question, be prepared to hear every possible answer without being offended (within reason) by what Im about to say. And it is based on this example: I was given a gift a few years back through a family function that I couldnt attend. I didnt like the gift. In fact, I strongly disliked it. The discussion was over the fact that I likely not only wouldve failed to hide this dislike had I attended the party, but also wouldve probably tipped this dislike through conversation prior to the gift exchange. (It was a fairly topical gift.) And my point in this is that in this scenario, I shouldnt be the bad guy. How can I be when I dont have a clue - or any way of knowing - that my response to a normal question might hurt a persons feelings? And Ill be honest, Ive had friendships damaged/lost entirely through my honest answers to questions. And it really bothered me at the time. But after awhile, I realized that wasnt my fault then either. If I offended someone based on an unsolicited opinion, sure. Ill take full blame for that, as well I should. But if youre going to ask a question - especially if thats a difficult question - dont put the other person in a position to where only a lie in response would make you happy. Be prepared for whatever you might hear and dont hold telling the truth against anyone. For any reason. Just my thoughts on the matter, at least.
