I used to like enjoy this game and every once in a while I still do. Thinking about it now, I can appreciate how much goes into making a game like this, despite how incredibly simple it is. * Creating the mesh for a randomized terrain heightmap * Texturing the terrain * Rendering clouds and fog * Detecting collisions with the terrain, buildings and enemy planes * Allowing the player to orient the ship on all 3 axes * Performing intersection tests for the shots fired * Loading models for the ships and buildings * Performing matrix operations for the camera and positions of models in the world * Animating the spinning tunnel segments, aperture doors, and boses * Also, this game had *shadows*. Even Half-Life, which came out over 3 years later, didnt have shadows cast from moving objects. IIRC, they had originally planned on it but it was hurting performance. Oh yeah, and all of this was done before anything like OpenGL or DirectX was in widespread use (OpenGL existed but wasnt in widespread use in DOS video games as far as I know -- I may be wrong). Im guess all of this was probably accomplished with INT 21h. Oddly... the official website actually lists the following as system requirements for this game: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8. Intel Core 2 Duo or higher. Minimum 2GB of RAM. I wonder what the minimum requirements for solitaire would be...
