have spent the last few days in the interior of suriname, along the saramacca river to be precise.the saramaka people are of african descent.they arrived there after escaping from the sugar, coffee, banana plantations in the 17th/18th century.trying to find out if any awawak people were displaced with their arrival?they now form many communities along the many rivers of the region.of course they have modernised now & use outboard motors on their boats & all have mobile phones,an important tool for them.its a very peaceful place & i have enjoyed the tranquility & hospitality of these people, with walks through the forest & swimming in the beautiful river.downsides are the old enemy, plastic trash, although you can drink the rainwater, most tourists wont.
