he Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has released the 2012 Primary Leaving Examinations results. The results were handed over to the Ministry of Education minister, Jessica Alupo after the Secretary of UNEB, Mathew Bukenya briefly went through the statement. 2012′s performance has slightly improved from 2011 with over 480, 000 students passing as opposed to the 444,000 students who passed in 2011. Results of 43 schools were withheld because of examination malpractice. According to Bukenya, the results of the 1, 603 students which were held will be examined to confirm if there was malpractice of any sort or not. Some of the schools whose results were withheld are St. Charles Lwanga which had 163 students’ results withheld, Norah Junior School had results of 25 students withheld, Bombo Mixed with 77 students’ results withheld, Zilobwe Primary has 150 students’ results withheld and Busika Primary which had 36 students’ results withheld. Selection of students going to S.1 will kick off next week ahead of the new academic year beginning 4th February. Head teachers are expected to pick up the results of their respective schools from UNEB offices in Ntinda beginning today at 2:00pm. For students who want to receive their results earlier, SMS PLEINDEX NUMBER and send to 6600. 565,663 students were registered by the examinations board of which 463,332 pupils were UPE candidates, while 102,331 are non-UPE candidates. 1,000 special needs candidates were registered to sit for the exams and about 70 prisoners based at Luzira Prison are also registered for the examinations. Districts which registered the lowest failure rate include Fort Portal, Ntugamo, Rukungiri, Mbarara, Entebbe, Kabale and Jinja among others. Those with the highest failure rate include Iganga, Bulambuli, Kaliro, Kamuli and Kayunga districts.
