Lloyd was among the persons invited by the police over the July 8 fracas in the assembly in Port Harcourt. He was captured in a video assaulting a fellow lawmaker, Michael Chinda, with the mace. The Punch had exclusively reported on Wednesday that Lloyd honoured the police summons but was detained overnight by a team of detectives who quizzed him. Findings indicated that the lawmaker may not be released on bail till Thursday (today) because the detectives were not done with him yet as he had not given satisfactory answers to the questions put to him. It was gathered that he might face criminal prosecution for assaulting Chinda. Our correspondents learnt that Lloyd would be released to his lawyers on bail because the police authorities did not want to detain him for over 48 hours without arraigning him in court as stipulated by law. CONSTITUTION AMENDMENT: REPS REJECT IMMUNITY FOR PRESIDENT, GOVS The House of Representatives on Wednesday passed 85 new clauses to the 1999 Constitution (as amended), among which was the rejection of immunity for the President and state governors facing criminal charges. By the new provision on immunity, the President, Vice-President, governors and their deputies will vacate office, if convicted of any criminal offence. A total of 339 out of the 360 members of the House voted on Wednesday to pass the clauses. Voting and collation of results ended at about 10.43pm. On immunity, 306 members voted to remove it, 17 opposed it, while 14 abstained. The House retained four years as the tenure of office of elected officials. Similarly, 293 lawmakers voted to endorse autonomy for local governments, as against 39 who opposed it. Seven others abstained. Independent candidacy was also endorsed by the House, meaning that in future, persons who do not belong to any political party, can stand for elections as individuals. ALIYU, 10 OTHERS SHUN PDP GOVS’ MEETING The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum may not be over soon as 11 out of the 23 governors of the party failed to attend its meeting in Abuja on Wednesday night. The meeting, which was initially slated for 3pm, had to be shifted to 8pm when information got to its organisers that majority of the governors might not attend. At 8pm, the National Chairman of the party, Dr. Bamanga Tukur, who was also at the Akwa Ibom State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro District, Abuja, had to leave due to poor attendance by the governors. Tukur was said to have come with the intention of briefing the governors on the modalities he had considered before naming members of the party’s National Reconciliation Committee. The majority of the governors and other stakeholders were said to have rejected the appointment of the Governor of Bayelsa State, Mr. Seriake Dickson, as the chairman of the committee. NYAKO FREE TO LEAVE PDP –TUKUR The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr. Bamanga Tukur, has asked the Governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako, to leave the party, if he desires to do so. He also said there was no way the party could die, whether he (Nyako) left or not. Tukur, who is from Adamawa State, was responding to statements credited to the governor and the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Kobies Aris, that he (Tukur) was working towards killing the party and should be removed. In a statement by his Media Assistant, Mr. Oliver Okpala, in Abuja on Wednesday, Tukur said it was wrong for them to have said the party would die. TWO-MONTH-OLD BABY, PARENTS DIE IN MIDNIGHT FIRE A two-month old baby and her parents lost their lives in a midnight inferno that razed their residence in Kajola community, Osun State, in the early hours of Wednesday. A resident, who pleaded anonymity, said the couple and their baby were consumed by the fire without anyone noticing in the neighbourhood. It could not be ascertained whether the tragedy occurred before a light rain on Wednesday or after. Our correspondent, however, noted that the incident had thrown the community into grief. One of the children of the deceased, who went for a vigil, wept uncontrollably when she returned home in the morning to meet the charred bodies of her parents and sibling. All the household gadgets of the family were burnt in the inferno suspected to be caused by a power surge.
