hey everyone! just a reminder than there is no photo club tonight, or during august, as ill be out of town. HOWEVER, we will be back in september, when well start holding meetings on the first and third WEDNESDAYs of each month (remember that this is not always every other wednesday, if a month happens to have five of them). in the meantime, we came up with a few projects we can all work on seperately-together over the summer. we all brainstormed these at the last meeting, so im here to fill you all in. please correct me if i mistook some details. project 1: panoramas. most of us wil be doing at least some travelling this summer, every if its just a short country jaunt, or exploring the unknown nuances of our own home town(s). wherenver we find ourselves, if we all make an effort to take some panoramic shots, there are a lot of projects we can combine our experiences in; one option is the little planet photo, where well turn our panoramas into singular worlds using the magic of photoshop. you can read more about that here: (content.photojojo/tutorials/create-your-own-panorama-planets/). charles has already volunteered his editing expertise to help us out with that. another idea was merging several of our panoramas together to get a single photograph that encompasses all of the places each of us visited. project 2: summerscapes scapes can come in many forms - the traditional landscape, of course, but also the cityscape, seascape, skyscape, streetscape - the list can go on and on. basically, all it means is a wide establishing shot of the scene in front of you. if we all make an effort to capture the broad picture of the places we find ourselves, we can then combine our final shots to create a body of work that compares and contrasts the simultaneous similarities and differences between several parts of the world. when thinking bout this project, consider the things that unify different cities (waterways, bridges, ports, highways, etc.) as well as the things that make that place completely unique. these can be combined with a few other themes we thought of incorporating into our work: a: ourselves! if you can get yourself to be part of that panoramic planet, or in the distance of your own landscape shot, we can create something between is that is very representative of the people that are part of the ghent photo club. b: a unifying object; we decided on a camera lens. if you dont have a spare, the same effect can be achieved with a magnifying glass - hold it out in front of your camera, in the middle of your shot. the image behind it will become inverted and magnified within the glass itself. this effect can also be seen in curved crystal, like a wine glass. example is in the comments. c: phone polaroid shots. back in the day, people would play with polaroids by creating one, instantly developing it, and then holding the picture up to the same scene and photographing it again. nowadays we have phones instead of polaroids, but the same technique can be used. take a photo on your smart phone, then hold the lcd screen up in front of the scene itself and take the shot again. this can be done either to create repetition and mimic the scene exactly, or to create juxstaposition in a changing location between a photo taken at one instant and one taken at another. example in the comments. d: free-lensing; this technique is used on slr or micro-4/3 cameras - anything with a detachable lens. it involves removing the lens and holding it over the mount, but unattached. this allows you to make minute shifts in the angle of the lens, which alters the cameras plane of focus and imitates a tilt-shift lens effect. this is best done with detail shots because moving the focusing lens away from the sensor makes it unable to focus all the way to infinity. (read more about it here: abeautifulmess/2012/04/free-lensing-photography-tutorial.html) and lastly, when photographing infrastructure and other public areas, especially in a city youre not familiar with, photographers can and do run into trouble from the authorities. its important to read up on what your rights are as a photographer and make sure you politely hold onto them. read all about them here: https://aclu.org/free-speech/know-your-rights-photographers use this page to discuss and share your ongoing work, so we can be sure were all on the same page and will be able to combine our work in a coherent sort of way! also use the hashtag #ghentphotoclub whenever you put this stuff on instagram, etc. what do you think? was there anything i missed?
