hey shiny happy people its that date again! its september the 11th! ;) - A series of studies at the University of Michigan in 2005 & 2006 showed not only that people routinely dismiss facts that dont fit their beliefs, but that they actually harden their beliefs when presented with contradictory facts, perhaps in an effort to avoid cognitive dissonance. Moreover, the most misinformed people had the strongest opinions and the most politically sophisticated thinkers were the least open to contrary information. The facts arrive at our brains already pre-filtered by the distorting lens of the stories in which we operate. One thing that almost never works is to overcome the subjects opinions through the force of logic and evidence.
