On the morning of July 6th, 2014, in Pozzuoli near Naples, a 6 yr old sweet natured black dog by the name of SPIKE (seen on the right hand side of the photo) was taken for his morning walk with his 82 yr old owner. While in the park off his leash for his short moment of freedom the elderly gentlemen lost sight of his dog. It wasnt the first time however and Spike would always soon after return home with a satisfied look on his beautiful face. This time he didnt return, something went terribly wrong. Little did Spike know he was wandering into a lair of evil. The old gentleman and his wife reported him missing although still convinced that hed come back home safely. He never would ever again. He was found at 10am that same day. He had been beaten almost senseless with a metal object that may have been a pickaxe. His head and face especially, as can be seen in the above left photo, took the brunt and were beaten to a pulp. His head was that swollen he could hardly open his eyes; and he had also been also tortured. His attacker, not content with having brutalized him had then drenched him in petrol and set him alight. All of this happened in the presence of 4 terrorized young children. Spike somehow must have found the opportunity and strength to escape only to be soon after hit hard by a car that of course didnt stop to aide him. Someone would later testify that hed seen a black dog staggering in the middle of the street. That someone of course hadnt bothered to go over and investigate. He was left to the indifference of passers-by for over an hour; and was later discovered slumped in a green area in the street near home in agony and suffering from shock (at the time the left hand picture was taken) by an animal rescue center volunteer, Giulia DOriano, who was out with other dogs on a walk. She called the ASL veterinary state health department who would arrive onto the horrific scene within a half hour. While awaiting them she noticed that Spike, despite the pitiful state he was in, held a dignity about himself. His will to live was so strong that everytime he collapsed down hed pull himself up the same as if convincing himself that everything was ok. Dogs and especially cats are renown for hiding their ill-being and poor Spike was no exception. She was the last person that he would receive affection from. When Spike saw the rescuers arrive he managed to wag his tail for them and when they saw him they were mortified. Never had any of them, the volunteer included, witnessed anything like it. They were very careful how they handled him and SPIKE was gently taken away. The Doctors also were deeply shocked and disgusted. He had 90% burns, the skin had melted off his nose and tongue, fractures, deep lesions, the skin torn off his paws, his right paw mangled (probably due to being run over) and he had internal injury. If all that wasn’t enough the attacker had amputated all his pads off his back feet. .... Everything was done to try to save Spike but sadly he passed away during the night. A horrific death. A horrific crime. The Police and Italian Media named as author of the attack 22 yr old Father of 4, Gennaro Imperatore. Reason ? SPIKE dared to go near Imperatores pit bull which was out loose on heat. On July 26th, A march was organized in memory of SPIKE by the P.A.E. (Partition Animalista Europeo) headed by Stefano Fuccelli and Enrico Rizzi. Hundreds of Animal Activists and Animal Loving Italians joined forces together in Pozzuoli to protest against the crime and the slaying of an innocent creature. Before the march took place the Pozzuoli Chief of Police stipulated that the protesters were not to disturb anyone by shouting, or by using whistles or megaphones; and were not to hand out leaflets or use banners. It was clear that the march wasnt welcome. When protestors arrived by coach into Pozzuoli they were greeted with applause by the towns citizens. One shop keeper even gave each protestor a bottle of water from his store. Fortunately the protesters didnt obey to the absurd rules layed down and the march went ahead without complications with the people of Pozzuoli marching by their side. SPIKE’s owners were present. The elderly couple were clearly very distraught but grateful to see how their beloved dogs killing had caused so much compassion. He was like a son to me, the old gentleman said. The Mayor of Pozzuoli was witnessed by some to have shown up at the very end of the march. He reluctantly spoke to Fuccelli and Rizzi and promised that he would have a statue built in the spot were Spike was found that fateful morning. He also promised to build a rescue center for dogs set up in Spikes name; and he finally agreed, as Mayor of Pozzuoli, to have a Civil Case brought against Gennaro Imperatore for the torturing and killing of SPIKE. Everyone is still , since then, awaiting for the three statements to be materialized. Has Gennaro Imperatore been arrested ? No. An official Police Report (denuncia) against him has been drawn up and there will be a hearing, one day….. Till then hes a free man. This is just one of many atrocious crimes against animals in Italy that are proving to be on a steady rise and it demonstrates that the law there is bewilderingly lenient, out-dated and soft towards animal cruelty and the sick individuals who are committing these disgusting crimes. The mentality of the average Italian is: Its terrible yes, but theres nothing I can do, it will never change. Italy does however have a small but strong animal movement that are fighting a grueling up-hill battle in trying to get the out dated 10 year old presiding law against animal cruelty reformed but evidently the government is not interested. The law of 20 July, 2004, no.189 penal code article 544-ter (articolo 544-del codice penale) states that he who causes sufferance or torture to an animal risks 3 to 12 months in prison and a fine of 3,000 to 15,000 euro. If the cruelty results in death then the prison term increases by 50%, however; if the sentence given by the judge is for less then 36 months then there will be no imprisonment. One law annuls the other !Till now no one has ever been arrested, convicted or subsequently imprisoned and crimes against animals are spinning madly out of control. Many people are having difficulty coming to terms in how something like this happened and, more so, has been and IS allowed to happen in a civilized educated country like Italy. According to the American press Italy, especially South, is losing a large amount of tourism due to its growing negative reputation for having animal rights issues. Please help in making Spikes death not be completely in vain and may he be remembered at having triggered a long needed reform in the out-dated policy that protects monsters.
