https://youtube/watch?v=QoXTZFF1O-U As I watched this card unfold my mind looked back on Christmas Eve 1969. I had just picked up a WAF at the Memphis airport. She was headed to New York city to surprise her parents for Christmas. I was headed to a town near Pittsburgh for the same reason. Not having been home for Christmas in three years it would be a treat. We were on our journey north to St Louis where we would take I-70 east ward. But as we got closer to St Louis the snow started to get heavier and heavier. When we got on to I-70 it soon became clear that the trip was not going to be easy as the road was one lane in each direction. Well shortly after St Louis a lone figure with his thumb out and in summer weight uniform a Marine was hitch hiking on that snow covered night. Of course I stopped one GI helping another on this night before Christmas. As soon as he got in the car I asked him if he new how to drive a stick and low and behold he did, I pulled right over and switched places with the Corporeal. There the three of us continued our journey east ward. The Air Force Sergeant who had not been home for three years. The Air Force WAF who was on her way home to New York city. A young Marine who had just got leave from Guantanamo Bay Cuba was going home to Effingham Illinois. The three of us were on our way, it was snowing to beat hell. We made to Effingham and started down the road to this young mans home. We got out of the car in the wee hours of December 24th. The three of us went up to the door and rang the door bell. The lights came on in the house and all I remember was a voice saying it is Johnny and then all hell broke loose. I have never seen so many kids as I saw that night. We went in and had a great breakfast. I will always remember Johnny and his family. Jo Ann who went on to her home that Christmas Eve. It was a long time ago but it is a time I will never forget. We all surprised someone that day. To all a Merry Christmas.
