https://youtube/watch?v=UZ5BpeHVTWY Just wanted to share this with you guys. I know a lot of you dont play games or dont really understand it, so I just wanted to take a moment to talk about why gaming has become such an important part of my life. The gaming industry has grown massive, it is raking in more money now-a-days than even Hollywood. In terms of entertainment, it is the larger producer and market share that exist. But there is a reason for this - gaming is big because it is the culmination of so many genres. Art, Language, Critical Thinking, Competition, Curiosity, and so many more things come together to create entire new worlds. It builds complex in-game markets and interactions. When I very young I played a game called Diablo 2. One of the ways you could make your character stronger was by acquiring items. This caused certain items to be valued more, and because you could trade with other players it ended up creating a complex market economy with constantly fluctuating prices not just for the completed items but also the raw resources that went into them. It allowed clever and smart people to build entire enterprises. This was couples with the mathematics that allowed us to project that world onto a screen, intense graphic interpretations and artistic expressions of different creatures and worlds, and an incredible story line that is more powerful and compelling about human nature and perseverance than something as simple as Dantes Inferno. This is where I get upset. Games for awhile where continually approaching and breaking barriers. The huge income in the industry allowed for entirely new ideas and archetypes to be created. Art, math, and logic where all pushed. Hell, I even heard about one game that allowed to a bunch of gamers to sequence amino acids in two weeks versus the 5 years it was normally taking a real lab to do. But something went wrong. You know how everything you see on Cable TV is just a steaming pile of bullshit? Jersey Shore? Honey BooBoo? And are news companies are playing on this same trend, they are appealing to simple concepts. Hope, your need to feel superior, or fear. These 3 things have severely limited intellectual expression and have contributed to stagnating a good chunk of a generation. I understand that not everyone is going to be a genius, but when you watch shit all day it gets in your system. When you dont think hard about anything, you wont be able to once the time comes. This same trend has started to infect gaming. We have essentially the same games repackaged over and over and being sold in massive amounts. CoD barely develops a story, they never have. There is no appeal to allegories or human inspiration. They have gut anything that allows an uneven playing field, this means that the 10-year-old trying to tie his shoe wont be disadvantaged vs the 22-year-old with a mathematics and marketing degree that fully understands the in-game market systems and is able to generate revenue off it. They cut these things out, and they proceed to cut the story lines of these games for the same reason. Critical thinking skills dont trap that part of the audience that plays just to feel good about themselves, and these back stories and fantasies that are arguably the current peak of literary genius are being culled. For those of you with kids, this means they wont ever have to think about the things I did when from playing games. They wont be faced with reflections of real human experience, instead they will just simply be pulling a trigger and getting a medal for it. Anything that doesnt make every single player feel like he is the best player in the game for these different games is slowly being cut out. Games that I have played have taught me that self-improvement is hard, but if I work at it I can grow as a person. Its ok to fail. Its ok to keep at things if I become a better person because of it. Theyve taught me perseverance. That is the most key thing here. Dedication and insight are capable, and growing as a person in every sense and genre of the word is capable through gaming. But these bullshit reward games that cut out everything but the feel good crap so you can feel like a king in your own castle are going to effect you. What I have linked below is someone who is a bit more elegant in some regards talking about a specific game. It is more aimed towards people already buying these sort of games, but effectively we need to make a stand. This has to come to an end. This corporate greed and sloth is just too much.
