One of my jobs as mayor is to increase the profile of Geelong and, sure, that increases my profile as well. But the figures speak for themselves. Look at the media that I generated within the first 100 days of being elected mayor. Over $15 million worth. The City could never afford to buy that much advertising. Each day over a million people know what’s happening in Geelong. It’s put us on the Government agenda. In the last year, we’ve received more than $100 million in State Government grants and there are over 4000 jobs in the pipeline. The number of ABN’s registered in the first quarter were up 19 per cent — 882 compared to 500 in the previous period. It’s also put Geelong on the national and international stage. We’ve had increased engagement with the UK, Europe and Asia — particularly China — about doing business here. It doesn’t bother me if the Huffington Post or anyone else wants to comment about my rather colourful appearance. I expect it, but at least they’re also talking about Geelong. The people of Geelong know what I’m like — I’ve never tried to hide it. I’m working hard to do the job that they elected me for. Even negative publicity has its benefits. It raises issues or concerns and sparks debate. The only time I don’t like publicity is when it isn’t true.”
